7 FAA ratings in 91 days

On May 4th, 2023, I started my FAA flight training with 100 hours and a Canadian private pilot’s license that I’d earned.

Just 91 days after enrolling in flight school, I’d earned 7 FAA ratings:

Private pilot, instrument rating, commercial pilot, multi-engine rating, CFI, CFII, and MEI.

Just 10 months after that, I received a job offer to join the largest regional airline in the US as a First Officer.

Being a successful independent CFI was critical to my success.

If I had take the traditional route, I’d guess it would have taken me at least another 9-12 months to get to the 1500 hours I needed for my ATP. 

Which path....flight school or independent CFI?

For most people, the shortest path to getting paid to fly (vs paying to fly) is to earn a CFI and become a flight instructor at a flight school.

Many in the industry called this the “Zero to Hero” journey.

Seems simple, right?

True….it is simple…but it also completely sucks!

When you work for a flight school, not only do you have to work for about $20/hour or so, but worse than that is that you will have zero control over your own schedule!

For example, thanks to controlling my own schedule, I organized each day exactly the same and that allowed me to work 7am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.

I almost never worked weekends, and I almost never worked evenings. The only exception was when I was training a student that needed night hours. 

Now consider my buddy Chris. He was a CFI at a local school and he told me that he had to be available to fly from 7am to 9pm, 7 days a week!

That was the school’s policy.

So that meant that he’d often do a morning flight, then he’d have a gap until the next flight…and another gap until the flight after that. 

You get the idea, right?

Chris’ schedule completely sucked compared to mine!

Plus, I was earning $675/day compared to Chris’ income of a paltry $200/day!

Go from private pilot to highly paid CFI in as little as 5 months

Be qualified to receive a job offer from a regional airline in as few as 15 months

In order to be qualified to fly for a regional airline, you have to have the correct ratings (commercial pilot, instrument rating, multi-engine rating) and, you have to have 1500 hours.

So how do you get those hours quickly?

While there are definitely a variety of flying jobs for low time pilots, they all have one thing in common, you get paid poorly, and you don’t get to fly nearly as often as a busy CFI.

In other words, if the airlines is your goal and you are in a hurry to get there, there is no faster, higher paying path than that of an independent CFI. 

Period.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say that most people will not make $167,000 in a year as an independent CFI.
